American Scanwiches

Posted on November 12, 2012 by JnrlStr | 0 comments

We’ve been interested in Jon Chonko’s series Scanwiches since we first laid eyes on the scanned images of sandwiches, featuring his prints and books in our storefront. We aren’t the only ones who are drooling over Scanwiches, either. Since creating the series, his website showcasing the series has become a phenomenon. From now through December, a new series of Scanwiches is being featured in the James Beard Greenhouse Gallery.

As a gallery dedicated to America’s culinary heritage and diversity, an exhibit on sandwiches, an American culinary staple, is a perfect fit. For this exhibit, Jon created a series of sandwiches from James Beard’s American Cookery. Get all the information about the event here and make sure to check out Jon’s mouthwatering new series.

Scanwiches Exhibition Closed, but Still Shipping.

On December 18th, we closed Scanwiches by Jon Chonko, and celebrated the following evening with a lively Q&A with the artist at Von on the Bowery. The Q&A was led by sandwich enthusiast Ted Berg, at an event hosted by DJ Greg Poole.

While we've taken down the show at JSx55 in preparation for our next installation, we continue to offer the limited edition Scanwiches prints and signed books via our online store and lower east side gallery.  Please contact us if you'd like to make an appointment for a personal viewing.

"Boxing Day" Scanwiches on the Nowness

Posted on December 26, 2011 by JnrlStr | 0 comments

"Nowness" is the digital leader in luxury storytelling. Each day, NOWNESS showcases an exclusive premiere of the most inspiring stories influencing contemporary culture and global lifestyle, previewing the latest in fashion, gastronomy, art, film, music, design, travel and sport. Today, December 26th 2011 they feature Jon Chonko's leftover scanwiches.

Tagged under Gastronomy, this what they had to say...

Comprising a slathering of cranberry sauce, a dash of gravy, Christmas ham, mashed potato and a spoonful of green bean casserole atop a classic dinner roll, Scanwiches blogger Jon Chonko creates the ultimate post-Christmas sandwich. There is no better advocate on the art of the sandwich than the founder of the cult blog, who uses a standard flat-bed scanner from the comfort of his desk at Google to share his daily bread with a dedicated fan base of carbohydrate-loving followers. No meager lunchtime snack, Chonko's "scanwiches" go to gastronomic extremes to offer beautiful and mouth-watering takes on the lunch box classic. “This one has all the fixtures of my own Christmas dinner,” says Chonko of his festive concoction. “It’s things that my parents or grandparents would make, but ready to go in a sandwich. It tastes just like Christmas.” Graphic designer Chonko has immortalized his Katz deli bun and filler in a new book Scanwiches dedicated to his blog—including such inspired variations as a soft noodle sandwich, and the “Dagwood sandwich” made famous by the Blondie comics. “The Dagwood was the craziest one,” says Chonko. “It’s the kind with 30 or 40 ingredients in. A particular challenge when they weigh 8lbs.”

Be sure to stop over there and "LOVE" it.
