Summer in the News.

Posted on February 11, 2013 by JnrlStr | 0 comments

We all had a great time last Thursday celebrating the art work of Leah Tinari, with the support of Zico, Wodka, Alibi, and DJ Vlad along with our partner venues Kupersmith, Blake Scotland and FattaCuckoo.

Thanks to the NYtimes: East Village Local Blog and the Daily News for helping spread the word about the event.

PARTY FOR THE OFF-SEASON CROWD

The night before Nemo walloped the city with nearly a foot of snow, Doug Jaeger and Kristin Sloan, the owners of Clinton St.’s JnrlStr (as in “general store"), threw a beach-themed “Summer” block party to celebrate the latest works by artist Leah Tinari, owner of Fatta Cuckoo, also on Clinton.

There, bars and restaurants dumped sand outside their doors, served free summer cocktails and handed out cotton candy Thursday evening. Among the bar-hopping guests was the Honey Brothers singer Ari Gold, whose band’s drummer is “Entourage” star Adrian Grenier. ( Read More... )

Nevermind the Nor’easter: ‘Summer’ On Clinton Street Tonight

Forget the impending snow storm: tonight on Clinton Street, it’ll be “Summer.” That’s the name of a multi-venue exhibition of paintings by Leah Tinari, owner of neighborhood hangout Fatta Cuckoo. Her art — along with food, drinks, and music by DJ Vlad & DJ Cles — will be showcased at her restaurant as well as at Kupersmith, and at shops JnrlStr and Blake Scotland.

Part gallery opening, part block party, the event is the brain child of Doug Jaeger and Kristin Sloan, who have recently expanded their creative studio, JaegerSloan, into a gallery and retail shop called JnrlStr. The partners became fast friends with Ms. Tinari and her husband, Martin Kirchoff, when they first popped into Fatta Cuckoo a few years ago.

“We started our businesses on the block at the same time,” said Mr. Jaeger. “When you work out of a studio space, local food is really important, especially when you work late. Then we began to help them with their Website and menus, and there was a driving need to collaborate.” Soon a kind of community network emerged, which they hope to foster and expand. “People joke that I’m a pseudo-mayor of Clinton street,” said Mr. Jaeger. “Which I don’t aspire to be – but I do have a desire to see the businesses collaborating.”

Though the street is anchored by high-wattage destinations like Wd-50 and Clinton Street Baking Company, smaller businesses still find it to be a challenging area. Even buzzed-about restaurants like Frankies Spuntino and Ed’s Lobster Bar have folded in the past year. “We are a bit far east and off the beaten path,” said Ms. Tinari. “Then we’re sandwiched between more residential streets and traffic that goes off the bridge. People use it as a thoroughfare after work and don’t necessarily stop on the street.” With few offices in the vicinity, most restaurants can’t justify staying open during lunch.

Summer on Clinton Street!

Posted on January 20, 2013 by JnrlStr | 0 comments

At JNRLSTR we focus on bringing together well made objects and works of art to create an environment that is a destination for creative minds.

Because we want to sustain an ongoing conversation about art and design and foster an innovative community we have collaborated with Leah Tinari to present her work in several of our neighboring stores and restaurants on Clinton Street.

Since 2010 Leah has run Fatta Cuckoo, a restaurant she designed and built with her husband Marty Kirchoff. Additionally, she has exhibited nationally and abroad and is currently represented by Mixed Greens Gallery where she will be exhibiting new work in an exhibition titled Mar's Planet opening May 30th.

Leah approaches her paintings with the same energy and exuberance that she has in everyday life; drawing on personal experience and relationships to build the content of her work she creates bright canvases that capture the essence of her existence. Her playful approach to life and work is apparent in the way she dovetails her restaurant experience and painting into one cycle of inspiration and artistic production.

The paintings on view for this exhibition were inspired by a trip with family and friends to Costa Rica and were curated as our way of bringing summer to the chilly winter months.

Leah's work is currently on view at JnrlStr, Fatta Cuckoo, Kupersmith, and Blake Scotland and can best be viewed Wednesday to Sunday from 6pm to 8pm. Look out for an invitation to a party this February celebrating these paintings and in the meantime stop by for a drink at Fatta Cuckoo and Kupersmith to check out the installation!

Skittish Tree - Martin Bravo Revival Video

Posted on January 02, 2012 by JnrlStr | 0 comments

This past Friday we were lucky enough to have a visit from filmaker Omar Zúñiga Hidalgo to stop by and document the Revival installation of Skittish Tree by Martín Bravo. As you can see from the footage Skittish Tree is a Sound Reactive Projection of a tree. In some ways it captures the relationship between nature and mankind. This piece turns the everyday relationship between the sounds we make into an immediate relation by a natural form. Soft sounds move the tree from side to side, while louder more abrupt sounds begin to shake the branches from the tree. We invite you to come by and check it out.

SKITTISH TREE will be at JSx55 until Friday January 6, 2011
at 55 Clinton Street, New York, NY USA
Between Stanton and Rivington.
From 7pm til 12am
